Ghana Platform to launch five new publications early 2010
WSMP Ghana will launch five new publications by Middle of February 2010. The publicatons comprise a Country Summary Sheet for 2009, which provides updates on Ghana’s MDG progress as at the end of 2009 for drinking water and basic sanitation… Another publication, The Data Puzzle in Ghana’s Water and Sanitation Sector, provides analyses on why there seems to be confusion over data disparities in the WASh sector, the causes, types and sources of data available and their pros and cons, as well as suggested use for each type of data. >>More.
Ghana to benefit from UK/Netherlands statistical development support
Ghana is among three African countries selected to benefit from funds from the newly launched Statistics for Results Facility (SRF), which aims to accelerate the strengthening of statistical capacities in developing countries through implementation of National Strategies for the Development of Statistics (NSDS). Rwanda and Mozambique will also participate in the pilot phase of the project to which the United Kingdom and the Netherlands are committing 50 million pounds and 27 million euros respectively. WASH Sector Investment analyses underway
The WSMP, in collaboration with the Water Directorate of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, is conducting a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector investment analysis. A consultant has already started the six-month study and the final report is expected by 4h December 2009. The overall objective of the assignment is to make available to stakeholders in the WASH sector, accurate, reliable and user friendly data/information on sector investments in Ghana from the year 1990 to 2008. WSMP briefs the press on effective data use
As a follow up action to a call by WASH sector stakeholders for more education on data use earlier in July at the Mole XX Conference, WSMP on 29th July briefed a section of the press on the issue to begin the educational process. Highlights of the brief include the fact that there are different data sources and different methodologies, different objectives for collecting and analyzing data; and the fact that it is important for the user to make informed choices of data for different purposes. WSMP also informed the public that it currently provides free advisory services on helping stakeholders to make informed choices of data. Download full press brief.
Mole XX calls for education on data use
Participants of this year’s Mole Conference have called for more education on use of data in the Water and Sanitation Sector. This cal was contained in a Communiqué issued at the end of the July conference. “We have taken note of the fact that there are different types and sources of sector data to meet the specific requirements of the user which demands that there should be intensified stakeholder education on the efficient selection and use of data.” More>>
No data on quantity and distance in 2010 census
Water and Sanitation stakeholder expectation for data on quantity and distance in the upcoming population census in 2010 may not be met. At a recent meeting in may 2009 in Accra to seek final stakeholder inputs into the questionnaire, officials of the hana Statistical Service contended that there are several sectors to be covered under the exercise and there was need to limit questionnaire for various sectors to manageable levels. WSMP launches Water and Sanitation Sector Directory
The Ghana Platform last Wednesday (3rd June 2009) launched a couple of water and sanitation related publications including A Directory of the Water and Sanitation Sector. The Directory contains addresses and brief descriptions of many sector institutions, both governmental and private. The directory will be distributed free of charge mainly to sector stakeholders. Individuals and institutions from the wider public are also free to pick copies at the WSMP Office in Accra. More>>
Every household must have a toilet – Director reminds landlords
The Director of Environmental health and Sanitation, Demedeme Naa Lenason, has reminded landlords that it is an offence not to provide toilet facilities in their houses or to convert their toilets and bathrooms into living rooms. According to the 2000 Population and Housing Census, he said, more than 20% of Ghanaians do not have any form of latrines and therefore resort to open defecation which poses serious environmental and health threats to society.
